Heard your students talking about the latest poker tournament or the weekend games at their houses? Seen them exchanging cash over the basketball game? With the increasing availability, accessibility and acceptability of gambling, more young people are gambling than ever. What may seem like harmless fun can actually develop into a serious problem for some people. As educators, you play an important role in the prevention of problem behaviors among young people. We encourage you to include gambling education as you fulfill that role.
What can educators do to increase the possibility students will have a healthy relationship with gambling?
- Educate staff
- Increase prevention efforts through classroom education
- Review school gambling policies (e.g., casino nights, bingo on campus, rules and penalties for gambling on campus).
